The Panerai story
Giovanni Panerai opened his Florence watch shop in 1860, and the firm became instrument-maker to the Italian Royal Navy. Its Radiomir of 1936 — a large, luminous cushion-cased diver built for commando frogmen, with cases supplied by Rolex — and the later Luminor with its signature crown-protecting bridge were military secrets for decades, produced in tiny numbers for combat divers.
Panerai stayed essentially unknown until the 1990s, when Sylvester Stallone wore one in Daylight and the Richemont group relaunched the brand globally. The design DNA hasn't changed in ninety years, and its collectors — the self-named Paneristi — form one of the most committed communities in watches, sustaining an active second-hand market for Luminors and Radiomirs worldwide.
What moves the price
- Panerai is a reference-number market (PAM numbers) — limited production runs mean two similar-looking watches can differ widely in value.
- Full sets matter: Panerai boxes, papers and spare straps materially lift offers.
