How to care for your Omega
A Omega is built to outlast its owner — but how it's treated decides whether it holds value as an asset or quietly loses it. The habits below cost almost nothing, and one theme runs through all of them: originality is value. Most 'improvements' owners make to watches reduce what dealers will pay.
Caring for a Omega: what matters most
Modern Co-Axial Omegas run longer between services than older lever-escapement calibres — Omega itself suggests intervals of five to eight years and up to ten for recent Master Chronometer movements. Vintage Omegas want gentler handling and a watchmaker who respects originality.
Master Chronometer models shrug off magnetism, but older Omegas don't: a magnetised balance spring is the most common reason a vintage Seamaster or Constellation suddenly runs wildly fast. It's a cheap fix — but easy to avoid by keeping the watch off speakers, laptops and magnetic clasps.
Omega care checklist
- Speedmaster hesalite crystals scratch easily but polish out with Polywatch — one of the few 'polishing' jobs that's actually safe.
- Never redial a vintage Constellation or Seamaster; original aged dials are worth multiples of restored ones.
- Pressure-test dive models before swimming seasons — vintage Seamaster gaskets are usually long past their duty.
- Chronograph pushers should never be operated underwater on older models.
- Keep the correct bezel and handset for your Speedmaster reference — parts swaps hurt value even when they look right.
The universal rule: don't polish
Polishing removes metal — every pass softens case lines and rounds edges, permanently. Dealers and collectors pay premiums for unpolished watches and discount refinished ones. Honest scratches are expected and priced in; missing metal is forever. If you're preparing the watch for sale, clean it gently and stop there.
